David J Riddell

From Nelson, NZ we run Vision Building, Motivation and Goal Setting weekend retreats. I am sometimes asked whether or not this is some form of ’name it and claim it’ or just 'naked ambition’ that takes no account of the Christians call to 'take up our cross daily'.  The truth is

I encourage all my Living Wisdom presenters in training to diligently take up their cross by honing and owning their own inspiration, motivation and expectation and to take a long hard look at the destination before undertaking the journey.

To get whatever you dream of - to obtain your goal or quest, just do whatever it takes. But first scrutinise your definition of success because that vision WILL eventually take you to heaven or hell or a lost obsessional place somewhere in between.

This can be applied to many if not all relational partnerships. So, when two people have decided to 'yoke up' they must look very carefully at where they both want to 'end up’. Many discover along the way that they do not actually have the same vision in mind. I have observed many couples who have lost good years within the rut of pretend agreements with sad break-ups that could have been easily avoided with a more dialogue about the kind of journey they want and the destination they would like to end up in.

So, preparation for sustainability’s sake is a priority before beginning any new journey isn’t it? That’s Living Wisdom.

Every Blessing. David Riddell, Nelson, NZ.

I am not a follower of secular numerology, but I do recognize the powerful ways in which God orders our steps with meticulous detail. I particularly love it when God reveals His presence through numbers. For example in this year, 2020 I was to teach my 40th Two Week School in Uganda. I did this but not in the way I had planned. This was the most eventful and miraculous trip I have had to Africa. It was bittersweet and will never be forgotten.

As always, the students were grateful, willing to learn and ready to work hard. I’ll add here my personal thanks to those who provided sponsorship money from Australia enabling many to attend who would not have been able to afford the opportunity.  With high hopes the students and I set off on our learning journey. But outside the classroom the spread of COVID-19 was beginning to change everyone’s plans.

As the virus turned into a pandemic, restrictions to travel, work, gatherings and social contact began to escalate in Uganda. Aware but not deterred we pushed on with our studies. However, it was clear that by the end of day seven for everyone’s safety and wellbeing we had to terminate the school and release the students back to their homes.

This was difficult and sad for us all. For me it was because I knew how willing the students were to learn and how much of the teaching they had not received. We managed to send everyone home with a USB containing the full two weeks training, their Certificate and their commemorative 40th Living Wisdom School T-Shirt, a memento that will always hold tremendous significance. I do hope, that in the future we will be back in Uganda finishing off this school and perhaps holding another.

Class of 2020

The next ten days held me on the edge of faith as tensions, restrictions and uncertainty hovered around all visitors to Uganda. I could not have achieved what I did and returned home safely without the tremendous support from local leaders such as Margreet,  Rembrant, Ian and the Makindye Country Club and my global partners, friends and family. Thank you all so much. Through prayer, divine connections, support and the supernatural help of God, I got home.

Uganda class of 2020. Unfortunately, there are several students missing from this photo as some returned to faraway lands during the first week as their countries called them home. Another few were in the process of returning as this photo was taken to their homes many km’s away.

Testimonies from the Uganda School

Thanks for your time in Uganda and Living Wisdom team, before attending the course I didn't know how much I let other people determine my worth and value. Now I am on the journey of taking my value back to my hands and knowing that am worth 8 cows and I am excited about my future for the first time in a long time.  Eseza

I have been thinking about you a lot, remembering how you made us laugh in class, for sure you're a fun Teacher!  So sad we didn't get to finish the two weeks together, but I will say it was still one of my best weeks ever, thank you for your kind gentle words it meant so much to me. You made me feel safe and free from so many fears, even though you are many miles away I can still see your beautiful smiles, I hear your voice encouraging me to keep believing I can do it. I'm seeing things I didn't see before I am learning new things about myself and life, knowing that God has given me the power to say yes, and no in love, I am happier now days. God Bless you!   Angel Akullo

Thanks to a very generous donation I was able to take Mike Regan Keya a new computer and second-hand phone for his University studies. He is incredibly grateful and a worthy steward of these resources.

One of the tenets of Living Wisdom is to be flexible in our attitudes and astute to new opportunities being presented to us. Following my return from Uganda and during my mandatory isolation period I had the opportunity to reflect on how I might still continue to share the truth of Living Wisdom given the closure of offices, churches, schools and public gatherings.

How wonderful to have technology work for me in a new and exciting way. I am referring to Zoom. I have jumped into the steep learning curve of  Zoom to enable me to keep teaching. In reality it is exactly what I have been doing for the past twenty years but in a newer, sleeker vehicle. I’ve ditched the horse and cart and hopped into a new BMW Coupe.

Wisdom Wednesdays are a series of workshops. This teaching is short and punchy! Give me an hour of your time and I will give you powerful teaching to start you on a truth journey or continue your growth from strength to strength. When you register for a workshop this is what you will receive:

I don’t mind saying this is incredible value at $10! In June we are exploring our moods and emotions.  Depression, Anger, Anxiety and Grief.  In July we will ‘break’ for school holidays and my Dalby school. From August the new price will be $15 per person and workshops will be fortnightly. I encourage you to go to my Resources for Purchase page on my website to review or purchase any of the teachings so far.  Also the Coming Events page to book for the workshop/s of your choice.

Dalby Two Week Living Wisdom School – July 20th – 31st 2020.

I am excited to be back on the road in mid-July, heading west of Brisbane. Why not come out to regional Queensland and discover the well of wisdom, truth and life skills that this unique and powerful course provides. Although we will be meeting and learning in an open group forum, we will be do so conscientiously maintaining socially safe distancing, practicing regular hand hygiene and removing ourselves from the classroom if we are at all unwell. Please go to my website to register.

Brisbane Two Week Living Wisdom School – January 2021

Start planning for this school now. It is the only one that I hold out of school term. Because of strong interest from many teachers and colleagues of Livingstone Christian College we will be holding it on their grounds in Ormeau.

Rule 2 speaks of being powerless in many situations and how difficult that can be. Some of the lies we believe are along the lines of:

But the My Life Rulz resources challenge some of those lies by reminding us of the absolute truth.  Truth such as shown in the image here.  I have spoken to many people during this Co-vid19 lock down time and I must say it is wonderful to here that at least 60% of those people are finding the ‘silver linings’ in the situation.  You see, they are learning to adjust and they are learning that they can control their attitude and their response to the situation when we can’t control things.

It has certainly been a full and expansive quarter since we last spoke. My personal note for this season is to end with my testimonial story of Uganda. Please click the link to see an interview between myself and my pastor about trip to Uganda and home again. Bless you all.

Greetings dear Living Wisdom friends, clients and family,

As many of you may know from my Living Wisdom Australia FaceBook page, I am currently in Uganda and the borders have been completely closed so I am unable to leave at this time. The prediction is that without repatriation flights being negotiated with the Ugandan Government I could be here from 1 to 6-8 months. No one knows. So in response to this current situation there will be some changes for my clients, especially you who are currently booked into my calendar.

In the next 24 hours my current appointment calendar will be completely wiped and a new booking calendar will be set up. The times available to you will change because of the time difference between us. The GOOD NEWS is that for those who choose to re-book with me the new fee for now is $50 rather than $100. This is in response to the hardship people will be facing and our current worldwide situation.

Please re-book with me if you would like to talk because I would love to continue serving you from here. It is so nice to be connected to familiar people and places while we still have the luxury of internet and power.

The options to speak with me will also change to cope with the intermittent internet here. I am sorry for the inconvenience this causes and hope we can still make the most of a difficult situation. For me, this is a divine invitation to practice what I teach and what I counsel. It isn’t what happens to us that really hurts us, rather it is how we choose to respond to it and think about it. (Rule 7 from My Life Rulz)

There are very real dangers and challenges here but I will use wisdom and reassurance to live daily life with my mind looking after me. After all, Living Wisdom’s motto is ‘Teaching Your Mind to be Your Friend’. David Riddell also reminded me that ‘stuck, is a state of mind, not a reality in and of itself’.

As we all hunker down for this incredible time that will go down in history may you tell yourself the truth and be determined to add meaning and growth to this short term pain for long term gain.

My Scripture this week has been Psalm 91:1-6. I was also very encouraged by this article written by an Italian Pastor.

1 John 3:18

Welcome to the first edition of my newsletter for 2020. I love this scripture because it’s a ‘doing’ instruction. Doing suits me best because I’m happiest when I live and work in agreement with Gods plan for my life. It wasn’t always that way. In the early days I struggled in many areas as I lived in my own strength. It took a great shift to move me from tension to freedom but as I learnt to trust God and apply His truth to my daily life, I became empowered. Friends, I hope that you are living your life enthusiastically under the Living Wisdom of Gods truth for your life. I pray St. John’s words are true for you as you live out today in freedom and ownership rather than obligation and emotional pain.

What better way to start 2020 than by hosting a two week Living Wisdom school? It is both a privilege and an honour to share truth with people that guides them to new pathways in freedom. It’s my pleasure to share two student testimonies with you.

Kaaren Smith (Pictured)

I am a teacher. Many of my colleagues have attended a Living Wisdom school and testify how much the material changed their lives. I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to attend a school and when that became available in Brisbane I registered.

What I learnt has opened new possibilities. I am endeavouring to make my mind my friend by using the right truth coaches and trusting the life and counselling skills to help me transform my thinking. I’d like to develop truth sessions for my Connect Group as well as strengthening my skill to ask empowering questions to enable others.

I am continuing to immerse myself in truth teachings from the course so I can realign my thinking. I’ve discovered how negatively I used to think about myself and how I could spiral downwards out of emotional control. As I apply truth to myself and others that I’m in relationship with I am trusting that the echoes and welds from the past will be released once and for all. How long this takes will depend on how much time I really give to meditating on the truth.

Katrina Rooney (Back Row – 2nd from this end)

My living wisdom journey began last April when I started counselling with Jo. At 60 years old I felt lost, fearful of the future and powerless to be the person I wanted to be for the people I loved.

When Jo said she was running a two week school without hesitation, I knew I wanted to go! The school saturated my mind with words of life and because of it today I have hope, I have a future and a life worth living as my mind is becoming my friend. Living wisdom gave me the keys to unlock the doors of well-hidden places in my mind that kept me captive all these years. The antidote is mine. The Truth that has set me free. For the first time in my life I can describe my dream day and what I would like my life to look like in the future. I am free to live the life God created me for!

Thank you to all Brisbane students who completed our first post school survey. The results were informative and clearly show areas for improvement. For example, it was not surprising that 100% of respondents thought the course was excellent and the manual was of critical importance to learning. Interestingly, whilst face to face teaching was critical to 88% others thought a mixed modality with self-directed online modules and some class work would have been good. We also gained insight on programming, scheduling and resource management and have started to apply some of our new learnings into our future work.

On the 14th March I will be on a plane making my way over to Uganda for the 4th Living Wisdom 2-week course. It is always an honour and privilege to serve the students who come, very hungry and very grateful. We usually have between 5 and 10 different nationalities attend as students, a mixture of nationals and ex-pats in ministry. It never ceases to amaze me how the Living Wisdom material cuts across cultures and still hits the mark to empower people in whatever circumstances they are in.

On the 10th March I will be drawing the ‘Gratitude Draw’ for the two counselling appointments with me. Anyone who has donated $80 or more to sponsor Ugandan students is eligible for the draw. I will post the result on my FaceBook Page.

From February 1st I made a commitment to post weekly on my Living Wisdom Australia Facebook page. I’ll be using graphics to illustrate a ‘Daily Insight’ from David Riddell’s training resources. My goal is to encourage you all and to keep the conversation going amongst our networks. Here is an example of a post and my thoughts around ‘P 71’.

If you have an emotional bruise (unbearable feeling) of feeling cruel, mean or unkind OR rejection/unloved OR disappointing others then you will probably be a rescuer and find it almost impossible to stop your unhelpful helping without some powerful truth and insights. Rescuing feels like love, looks like love at first but it is a counterfeit love. Rescuing is doing for others what they should be doing for themselves and usually from our own deep need to be needed. Oldest children who are given too much responsibility, often too soon are normally rescuers. The problem is, the rescuer and the rescuee are both being disempowered as they limp along in a co-dependent relationship.

My Life Rulz (MLR) continues to inform parents, carers and children on how to nurture emotional resilience in self (child) and others (carers). Many of you have already accessed our colourful resources but if you haven’t here is an example (picture). Children are excellent at remembering but not so good at interpreting the ‘whole’ story. With a partial truth, children can become emotionally bruised and without a kind and truthful debrief may remain locked in a misbelief indefinitely.

Our resources speak to the emotional bruise called stinking thinking. These word pictures are monotone in colour. We challenge the bruise by asking an empowering question and give two truth coaches (positive statements) to counteract the mis-belief. Our resources illustrate healthy positive thinking with bright colourful images.

Our material is primarily aimed at young children, but we are delighted to hear from many adults internationally who share how much My Life Rulz helps them too. This isn't surprising because the powerful insights in MLR help people of any age to build emotional resilience.

I would also like to draw your attention to the Downloadable resources for sale. These are Workshops that either myself or David Riddell have held around various parts of Australia and there is some incredibly powerful teaching at your fingertips. I am really proud to offer a new workbook and audio training package as well.

What a great start to 2020, I have hit the ground running. The January school was a blast, counselling is steady, I have run 4 training sessions with teachers, parents and young mothers at various schools and groups. Right now, I am also preparing for Uganda. Because of our horribly hot summer I have done very little outside in the way of my hobbies of gardening and mosaics but that has meant that I am doing other bits and pieces that need attending to. I got an email from my Super Fund the other day saying;

‘Joan, imagine better working hours, choosing your own income, and no one telling you what to do’

and I thought – that is my life already, why would I want to retire!

Uganda School Fundraiser

Thank you to those who have and will give financial support making it possible for others to access the power of Living Wisdom training. I believing this work has a long future because of Gods favour over His anointed people of Kampala who are being called to rise above their circumstances. Here is such a testimony from Dorothy Bingi’s (pictured below on the right) ministering in the Congo.

“My bus journey to Congo normally takes 2 days, but this time I spent six days and five nights on the road sleeping on the adjustable seat. We spent three nights in Garamba Park, with the fear of wild animals and maybe rebels. I ran out of clean water, and I had to eat food that had gone bad, maybe that is why my stomach is still giving me pain. At one time we got stuck in a 3-kilometre muddy area which was knee deep and very thick. People went to the toilet just there so terrible! In Isiro we are having a lot of insecurity…people are being robbed at gunpoint being tied up with ropes, and robbed of money, phones, motorcycles, and a lot of property. They shot at one of their sons but missed him narrowly. We heard the gunshot during our devotion time.  Many people around my neighbourhood have been robbed, even the nuns were robbed at gunpoint. In Isiro I have a lot of ministry to do, and I’m busy teaching in different churches and praying with our neighbours that come to our home every night at 7:30pm. Please pray that God will give me the message that will help people in this traumatic season, people are hopeless and looking for answers.”

These are the kind of incredible people we are asking you to sponsor for the 2020 Living Wisdom School – will you help?

Living Wisdom Annual Counsellors and Presenters Conference

I have just returned from my 14th Annual Living Wisdom Conference in Nelson, NZ with David and Rosemary Riddell.  November is timely for the conference because it always invokes fresh enthusiasm for the coming year.

Over the four day conference thirty trained or training counsellors attended. The program included professional development and then attendees had an opportunity to share their experiences from 2019. Hearing what other counsellors and presenters have done, their challenges, victories, the collective learning, fellowship and community atmosphere was inspiring and rewarding.

It was good to sit with so many and know there are other advocates of this work yet to come. A comfort for David and Rosemary who have been running schools and offering wisdom and truth for over 35 years and are looking at how they might slow down

My work has many different facets and one of my favourites is with groups who would like to explore a particular topic in more detail. In the last three months I’ve been able to do that in my workshops. In Bundaberg, the ‘Parenting Power’ workshop was well received. Feedback is showing me that this is a huge topic and parents are searching for authentic and proven solutions to the many difficulties 21st century parenting can bring.

In Brisbane, the ‘Exploring Relationships’ workshop was a collaborative presentation with Donna Mandelkow. Here, the Living Wisdom model was applied to the individuals subconscious mindset unpacking the possible blockages to finding and sustaining a relationship. The participants were receptive therefore, the information was well received and people were empowered.

Lastly, I spoke at Livingstone Christian College in late October on the topic of anxiety.  This epidemic in society especially affecting youth is very alarming. I have a real desire to help young people preferably with the support of their parents to find reassurance, hope, courage, strength and healthy thinking.  The key to emotional resilience lies in learning how to tell ourselves the truth and gain a new perspective.

If you are interested in hosting a workshop in 2020 for your group, school, church or community please contact me.

On a Personal Note

To look back over my year and pick out highlights is very difficult because I pretty much love everything I do and everywhere I go.  But, the stand out is meeting my mum in London (May) after another wonderful two-week school in Zambia. She flew from New Zealand and we hired a car and spent two weeks driving around the lower half of England and a good portion of Wales (where my Grandmother came from).  The scenery was brilliant, the weather was kind, the castles incredible and the time together was unforgettable. What a gift life can be. I am also aware that life can be incredibly difficult and challenging on a personal level and a community, national and international one.  It is all a constant reminder to stay anchored to the only secure place, regardless of life. In the great love of God. The God of hope, comfort, love, and refuge. Run to Him, not from Him. Remember, we can’t judge God’s goodness by looking at life. He is always good, regardless.

Spring welcomes us each year with the promise of new life and fresh beginnings. For Living Wisdom Australia this means new opportunities to reach out into community and share truth that revitalises life by unmasking embedded lies from deep within our psyche. What better way to spring clean than to have Living Wisdom founder, mentor and my friend David Riddell visit us in Australia?!

To Serve or Not to Serve – That is the Question (Obligation versus Ownership)

Life can be a series of choices between that which is born of obligation and that which is born of one’s own enthusiasm. Pretty soon one can find oneself constantly caught in the tea between these two massive psychological forces.  Selflessness versus selfishness. What ‘I’ need versus what ‘they’ need. What I want to do versus what I oughtto do. To help equip you for what is an endlessly on-going emotional battle for many people today, here are the two systems more clearly delineated to enable faster recognition of your dilemma.

Two Words: -

Ownership:my heart is in what I do.

Obligation:I have an ulterior motive, which isn’t quite cutting it.

Obligation equals resentment. Ownership equals enthusiasm. Service of others can be either, so the simple solution is to love it or refuse it. Therefore, to either do it or negotiate it might be the options you face, i.e. to comply or to counter-proposition, and to keep on counter-propositioning until we have reached what can only be described as enthusiastic agreement.

Now the entire solution is to either get your body where your heart is, or to get your heart to where your body is, and not to go on living with an on-going ambivalence.  To be ambivalent is to be double minded, and double minded is mental tension, and mental tension is emotionally exhausting. (No wonder you feel tired so much of the time).

And yes, it is indeed ‘more blessed to five than to receive’ according to the words of our Master, with this one caveat; that you serve on your own terms. Truly, what indeed must be done, should be done ‘with all of our might’, or else there is an on-going emotional dualism.

Now faithfulness is one thing, but obligation is quite another. Faithfulness serves whether it suits me or not, because I have a higher call – a higher purpose – that cares not for minor inconvenience; enthusiasm isunthreatened by faithfulness.  Obligation, by contrast, is a great threat to enthusiasm, bleeding the life out of motivation and ownership, because, quite frankly, my heart just isn’t in it.  And if I’m not into it, I won’t last, for my outgoings are now exceeding my incomings so the upkeep will prove to be my downfall, in time. Welcome to ‘brownout’ – guess what’s coming next if nothing is done about it?  Yes, burnout!

This also sheds new light on Gethsemane; it now becomes the place where I ensure that faithfulness doesn’t simply slide into a resentful martyrdom. It is the place (space) where I regain ownership, and avoid the resentment that double-minded dualism invariably brings.

Now I can face my ‘obligations’; to my spouse/marriage, children and friends, without fear of losing myself– my freedom – my own agenda in the process. Now I can get back the reins of my own life; in driving the children all over, home-care and cooking, sexual intimacy with my spouse or just paying the bills.  I’m loving it all because it is how I’ve chosento spend my time, and no one else chose it forme.

In this lies the key to sustainability, and what is sustainable is also true.

Living Wisdom Schools

I have run 3 schools so far this year.  Brisbane in January, Dalby in March and Zambia in April.  I am now in Cairns to start the two week school  from the 24th June to the 5th July.  Remember, that anyone can come for a full day FREE of charge as our guest at any school.  Click here for more details if you would like to attend.   I have a school planned for Perth in October but would really like to hear from anyone interested in that before I book my air tickets.  So, please, drop me a line if you are considering attending.

Living Wisdom in Africa

Both David Riddell and I were in Zambia in April this year at different ends of the country, I was south and David was in the north. David ran a two-week school with Steven Sakala who is a passionate Zambian determined to bring wisdom, truth and freedom to the people of his country. (link to website) They had around 30 students while I was in Kalomo with 18 students. That is 48 people in Zambia being taught, trained, equipped and feed with something that can continue sending out impacting ripples for decades to come. It would be good for us to find a way to bring these two groups of people together and we plan to return in 2021 to see if we can do that and run another school. We will need sponsorship to do this but know that God is a wonderful and faithful provider and that people are generous when they are enthusiastic for a cause. Is Africa on your heart? Both David and I are grateful for the opportunity to minister to these students and it is certainly mutual learning and growing

Living Wisdom in England

After Zambia, I flew up to England to meet my mother (who flew from New Zealand) for a two week road trip around parts of England and Wales.  What a wonderful time we had and what beautiful countries. Thanks to a couple of Living Wisdom Ambassadors in Kent, England, I ran two evening workshops while I was there.  It was so good to meet some keen students and give them a taste of the Living Wisdom material.  As a follow up Vanessa is offering the 7 -week Trace, Face, Replace DVD course for those who are interested.  Please email her to make her aware of your interest or to ask her for more information.

I also was incredibly blessed to spend a few hours, in Birmingham with students who attended a school with me in Uganda.

David Riddell in Brisbane - August

I am excited to let you know that from the 23rd to 30th August David Riddell will be here in the Brisbane area to run workshops and training before he heads up to Mackay for the Oceania Masters Championships. We are working on an itinerary with a wide variety of Workshop topics as well as a 'family gathering'' for all Living Wisdom friends, presenters, counsellors and ambassadors.  I will continue to update this PDF file as we finalise venues and topics but I am half way there and if you can start locking in dates now to attend that would be great.  We are calling you from north, south, east and west to come and make the most of this opportunity.  I know that driving several hours is no big deal to Australians!

My Life Rulz Update

In February I re-filmed the My Life Rulz Workshop. Laurie (Our My Life Rulz artist) and her son Jeremy have spent hundreds of hours editing the footage and uploading it, segment by segment to the new My Life Rulz You Tube Channel. The process is nearly complete and I am very thankful to them for all their hard work and commitment to the ongoing work of this project. The You Tube Channel replaces the User Guide DVD which was in the back of the Children’s Book, so it is now available for the world to see.

This workshop discusses: -
- How the MLR resources work
- How the implementation of replacing stinking thinking for healthy thinking will develop emotional resilience over time
- An overview of each of the 10 rulz (emotional building blocks)
- An introduction from David Riddell who is the truth coach expert and taught me all that I know

I know if you are serious about empowering children (any age can benefit) then you will take the time to look through the 14 segments on the Channel. Please subscribe and tell others about it. There isn’t a week that goes by now when I am talking to a parent in my counselling practice who is looking for hope, a strategy and help with how to better help their child.

On a side note – I have been enjoying many You Tube Clips and podcasts of Jordan Peterson (Canadian Professor and Psychologist) whose latest book is ’12 Rules for Life’ and I am so encouraged how closely aligned the concepts are to our 10 Life Rulz.

Resources for Rapid Personal Growth

I spent a couple of years listening to Living Wisdom workshops before I actually got to attend my first two-week school back in the year 2000. It helped me incredibly to unpack what was making me tick and some practical tools on what I could start doing about the things that were problematic in my life.
Why not have a good look around the digital downloads and other resources available for rapid personal growth and empowerment to have on your device, in the car, in your home or wherever you are. There are so many incredibly profound and helpful workshop topics available on these websites.
